Bigger post later, with pictures and pattern modifications, but I just wanted to post and say that they worked! My hands were the only part of me that didn't freeze today!
I have a pattern for big wool mittens that looks easier than the one you posted. I have made several pairs and they only use one ball. Also, our local wool shop sells them for $15/ball. You can get them online for $6.99/ball at Webs in Northampton, MA. I order 10 at a time b/c shipping is based on weight, not amt. Also, the trick to making them really warm is to line them with fleece. If you want my pattern let me know. Kathy
